Our company is gathered in the conference hall at 8:30 in the morning. The national census is on, so we cannot leave the compound, nor can we leave the room. We are going to be counted, along with the rest of the country. It's bone chillingly cold outside, but we're still in our summer uniforms so it is quite nice to be inside, but oh the sheer boredom of it: Just sitting there for hours on end, nothing to do, nothing to read or even write on. Our NCOs told us no one would be allowed to leave, in their usual timid way. “Please don't ask us to let you out. Don't ask us as friends or as brethren or as fellows. Don't ask how long this will take, or when it will begin. We don't know either.” Two officers enter and set up on the stage. They put on a film to pacify us: “Natural Born Killers.” No one in my squad liked it. They apparently prefer Stallone or Chuck Norris. We were in there for 6 hours. I am happy that I smuggled in a pen and a piece of paper. Pittsburgh, 10 November 2000 |
